The 2009 MMA Awards are happening as we speak here in Las Vegas, and the MMA Fight Shop staff is taking a break from irresponsible gambling and binge drinking to enjoy the show.
This is the second year of the show, but the first time it is being televised live. Many of the most famous faces of MMA are in the building tonight.
We're big fans of fight gloves, and would like to congratulate the UFC organization for winning the Best Fight Gloves of 2009 award. The other nominees in the running were Hayabusa, Everlast MMA, Fairtex, and Triumph United.
Brock Lesnar takes the title of "Breakthrough Fighter of the Year" this year, beating out Shane Carwin, Dan Hardy, Cain Velasquez and Jon Jones.
We'd also like to congratulate Jon Morgan of MMAJunkie.com who won the title of Best MMA Journalist. Due to what can only be explained as an obscene clerical error, MMA Fight Shop was not on the list of nominees this year. Luck for you, Jon.
When it comes to fight shorts, picking the best is no easy task. Somehow, the good people behind the MMA Awards were able to come up with a clear winner. Nominees included: Hayabusa, Sprawl, ADX, TapouT, and Warrior. The award went to TapouT.
For a complete list of nominees as well of the winners of their respective awards, head over to MMA Junkie.
On a personal note, I'd like to take a moment to give my condolences to world famous female mixed martial artist Gina Carano (who is also my secret lover), who unfortunately did not win the title of Female Fighter of the Year. To add insult to injury, she lost to Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the woman who gave Carano the only defeat of her career.
