After confessing to and apologising for beating his wife so badly that she suffered a broken jaw and a missing tooth, MMA heavyweight Brett Rogers was sentenced to 60 days in jail by the Dakota County Court.
"It was just one of those nights, you know," Rogers offered as an explanation of his behavior. "Ever since that night, it's been hell for me, you know?"
However, judge Karen Asphaug was less than sympathetic to Rogers. Asphaug described the beating that Rogers' wife, Tiuana Rogers, quit differently.
"I read about the events of that night and I'm filled with horror about Mrs. Rogers sustaining an injury that I'm sure was excruciatingly painful," judge Asphaug stated.
In an attempt to minimise his sentence, Brett "Da Grim" Rogers pleaded guilty to the charge of 3rd degree assault, which is a felony. He requested a less severe sentence than what is normally suggested by the state guidelines, but Asphaug refused to consider it. Charges against licensed professional fighters are generally more severe in the United States when it comes to assault.
It could have been much worse for Rogers. As part of his plea deal to plead guilty to felony 3rd degree assault, the prosecutor dropped the additional charges, including two counts of felony strangulation as well as the gross misdemeanor charge of endangering a child.
As a result of all of this, Rogers will not be able to have any contact with his wife until he successfully completes a domestic abuse program. He is also not allowed to drink alcohol or use any sort of drugs. Upon successful completion of the program, the charge will be reduced on his record to a misdemeanor.
Fortunately for Rogers and his fans, he will still be able to compete on December 31st in his fight against Tim Sylvia as part of the "Fight For Japan: Genki Desu Ka Omisoka 2011" event. This under-publicised fight will take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Also on the card will be a bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Satoshi Ishii.
Although Rogers is being allowed to travel to Japan to take part in the event, his request to postpone his jail time until after the event was denied. This means that a portion of time he would have normally spent training in preparation for the fight against Sylvia will be spent in a jail cell.
Luckily, there are no rules against doing pushups in jail.
