The clambering for the inclusion of women in the currently all-male UFC organisation has grown louder than ever, thanks to a petition on Facebook. We became aware of the petition when we noticed one of our favorite female fighters, Miesha Tate, had become a supporter.

Although Gina Carano has openly advocated the expansion of the sport of womens MMA, she is not the one behind the petition. However, it is safe to say she is probably on board with the idea. In a recent interview, Gina shed some light on why she believes that some men are opposed to the idea of women fighting professionally in MMA:

Guys are just real protective over females for some reason. At least some of the guys I know. Here's what I think: I don't think they can handle the pressure of not being able to save the female. She's got to fight her own battle, you know?"

An interesting theory. And even if that is indeed the case, it is only a matter of time before popular demand for the sport makes it something the UFC cannot ignore. At the time of this posting, the Facebook petition has already accumulated over 15,000 supporters. However, UFC president Dana White, as usual, is not convinced.

"I'm not a huge fan of women fighting, period", White quipped. Be that as it may, he has a business to run and is most definitely interested in making money. Should the demand for a womens division in the MMA become impossible to ignore, we will likely see it happen. It is now up to the fans to make their voice heard.
