Could there really be a mole in Rampage Jackson's camp? That is precisely what Mr. Jackson is claiming. Why? A couple of interesting reasons...
While training for his UFC 114 fight against Rashad Evans, Jackson sustained a slight knee injury. Obviously, Jackson wanted to keep this quiet. To his delight, this information never found its way into any MMA sports news outlets. However, Jackson reported that during the fight with Evans, he was repeatedly punched in the affected knee.
"I’d never been punched in the knee before and I never saw anyone punch someone in the knee,” Jackson reported.
In a more recent development, rumors circulating about a hand injury have reaffirmed Jackson's suspicion that someone on his team is leaking information. This time, the information was false. That's because Jackson intentionally fabricated the story to see if it would come back to him. Only four hours after making the fictitious report, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva got a call from Malki Kawa inquiring about the hand injury. Who is Malki Kawa? Kawa is a manager...who just so happens to manage Jackson's upcoming UFC 135 opponent, Jon Jones.
Kawa insists that he does not have someone acting as a spy inside Jackson's camp. His story is that he received the information via Twitter. Interestingly, it was a heads up from a Twitter user that alerted Jackson to the possibility of a spy being in his own camp.
Rashad Evans defended himself in regards to the former allegation by stating that the only reason he repeatedly attacked the knee of Jackson was because he seemed to react to it in the first place.
As for Jackson himself, he maintains that spy or no spy, his game plan and the outcome of UFC 135 will not be affected.
“I have zero care. I still have the honor of a fighter and going into battle the right way, not spying on my opponent," Jackson said. "I’m not scared about my opponent, asking a lot of questions or worrying about what he’s doing."
Whether or not this is truly a case of MMA espionage will likely never be confirmed. However, the subsequent drama does make for good MMA banter as well as hype for the upcoming event, does it not?
UFC 135 takes place on September 24th in Denver, Colorado.
