Over the past ten years we have seen a global explosion in the popularity of mixed martial arts. Thanks to organizations like the UFC getting such heavy mainstream attention, today's fighters are joining the hierarchical ranks of other athletes and even gaining celebrity. However, even with so many new eyes on the sport of MMA, some incredible fights still go unnoticed by the extended community. Luckily for them (and those of you with short-term memory complications), a master list of the most notable MMA bouts of the past ten years has been compiled.
It is important to note that we here at MMA Fight Shop are far too lazy to put the effort into putting together this sort of list on our own. Fortunately, Steve Cofield at Yahoo! Sports took the liberty himself to create such an article. If you're concerned about exhausting your mouse with additional clicks, or if you perhaps harbor a deep grudge against the Yahoo! empire, we understand if you'd rather not click away to see their article. That's why, in the name of convenience, we've filched the content over here for ourselves. We've spared you the long-winded explanations and extracted the nitty gritty:
10. Scott Smith vs. Pete Sell @ The Ultimate Fighter Finale in 2005
9. Royce Gracie vs. Kazushi Sakuraba @ PRIDE Grand Prix 2000 Finals
8. Cristiane Santos vs. Gina Carano @ Strikeforce this year (sad face)
7. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Bob Sapp @ PRIDE Shockwave in 2002
6. Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg @ UFC 52 in 2005
5. Randy Couture vs. Tim Sylvia @ UFC 68 in 2007
4. Quinton Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva @ PRIDE Final Conflict in 2003
3. Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva @ UFC 79 in 2007
2. Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar @ The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 Finale in 2005
1. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic @ PRIDE Final Conflict in 2005
With all of the incredible fights that happened this decade, we can only imagine how difficult it must have been to narrow it down to those ten. While we don't necessarily agree with all of Mr. Cofield's picks, we certainly respect them. To view the article in its entirety (after your mouse has properly rested, of course), click here.
Never got a chance to see the Fedor vs CroCop fight? My goodness...well seeing as how it has been deemed the #1 fight of the decade by the almighty Mr. Cofield, we feel it is our duty for us to do a bit more filching and provide it below. It is a bit long, so it is broken up into four videos. Well worth your time:
